You already know that email marketing is a great way to efficiently send your message to a targeted group of prospects with one click. Although it’s easy to benefit from email marketing, it’s just as easy to make unfortunate mistakes with it. Here’s a list of what not to do in your email marketing campaign.

1. “Not targeting customers.”

If you’re sending the same email to everyone, you’re losing most people. Take the time to segment your list and personalize the emails.

2. “Failing to use responsive design.”

Half of all emails are opened on mobile devices now. The moment a recipient notices that your email is not optimized for mobile and requires awkward scrolling or swiping to navigate, it will end up in the trash.

3. “Violating email marketing platforms’ terms of service.”

For lead-based campaigns, if you use MailChimp or Constant Contact, you will be reported for misusing the platform. These services are for customers who opt in to be contacted.

4. “Purchasing mailing lists without vetting the seller.”

If you buy a discounted list from a disreputable source just to save a few dollars, “it can land your email in spam folders or get your domain blacklisted by email providers,” Angeles says.

5. “Using an out-of-date email address list.”

Wonder how email providers decide what to mark as spam? They use “anti-spam programs that block or junk inactive email addresses, so having many outdated email addresses on your list could raise a red flag. Avoid getting your emails caught in the spam folder by making sure your email address list is up-to-date,” Angeles concludes.
